Teaching English and Other Subjects

 Program Description

Teaching English to children in Nepal is at times challenging but seeing their progress and enthusiasm makes the overall experience extremely satisfying. The volunteers will get the opportunity to teach students who are eager to improve their conversational English skills. Volunteers in this program will teach English to children in government schools. You may also teach in other disciplines such as maths, science, music, geography, art, dance, depending on your specific area of expertise .

The students that you will be teaching range from 5 to 16 years old, and are typically in groups of around 30-50 students per class. The subject material that you will be teaching will be taken from the Nepali students\' standard book. However volunteers are also encouraged to create their own lesson plans; lots of inspiration for classes can be found online as well.

In general, schools have a permanent staff member who will assist volunteers with their teaching and in communicating with the children and colleagues. Classes generally run six days a week, with four to six class periods each day and a break for lunch.
Teaching English includes: Teaching in Schools, Orphanages, Women\'s Groups and Village Community Libraries.

Requirements - There are no specific requirements for the program other than fluency in written and spoken English. However the best things you can have are patience and a genuine desire to teach and help children.

Program Dates - Are very flexible, the minimum time for the program is 2 weeks and the maximum length of stay is 5 months.

Suggestions -   Depending on the subject, volunteers can bring along teaching materials such as picture books, instruments, flash cards, art supplies, and songs (and a good sense of humor!)

Meals - Depending on your host family, you will start the day with a cup of tea. Lunch is served between 9:00am to 9:30am and is usually dal/bhat (rice, lentils and vegetables). Dinner is also dal/bhat 6:30pm to 7:00pm. The food is very simple but extremely tasty and filling.
Additional food such as biscuits can be bought at the local shop if you should still be hungry.

Accommodation - A simple room with bed. We advise you to bring a sleeping bag and mosquito net with you or you can always buy these here which is 2-3 times cheaper than back home.

Locations - Kathmandu, Chitwan, Dhulikhel, Godawari, Pokhara (We can arrange alternative placements all over Nepal)

When I organized my trip to Nepal, little did I know what an enriching cultural experience I had in store for myself. As a student of sociology, I was drawn to the cultural differences in Nepal, as well as the opportunity to help others. Traveling...
