Health and Sanitation Program

Program Description

This program is especially for doctors, nurses, nursing and medical students. Volunteers will work at hospitals and community health clinics in Kathmandu, Chitwan or Pokhara. Volunteers will be helping doctor or health assistants at the clinic performing tasks like dressing wounds, administering shots, drawing blood, holding babies while they are being treated, helping to screen and organize patients. They can also assist local staff with getting medicines/supplies, and generally helping out in whatever capacity they might be needed.
This program offers you a wonderful chance to support the work of local doctors and nurses in a country where health care is a major issue, and the number of trained staff in rural areas is low. As such your presence will make a huge difference to a community.

Requirements - Due to the responsibilities involved volunteers must be studying or practising in the healthcare field, as doctors, nurses, EMTs, and medical and nursing students with clinical experience. We do not accept premed students into the program.

Program Dates - Are very flexible, the minimum time for the program is one week and the maximum length of stay is 5 months.

Suggestions -   If it is possible volunteers can bring along with them materials such as First aid kit, medical books, instruments, and supplies.

Accommodations - A simple room with a bed. We advise you to bring a suleeping bag and mosquito net with you or you can always by here which is 2-3 times cheaper than back home.

Meals - Breakfast occurs at 6:30am and consists of a cup of tea and biscuits. Lunch is served at 9:00am to 9:30am and is usually dal/bhat (rice, lentils and vegetables). Dinner is at 6:30pm to 7:00pm and is also dal/bhat. The food is very simple but also extremely tasty and filling. Additional food such as biscuits can be bought at the local shop if you should still be hungry.
